PSA Nitrogen Generator: On-Site Nitrogen Production Explained
Engineering Background
PSA stands for pressure swing adsorption. Two vessels filled with carbon molecular sieve alternate between adsorption and regeneration. Compressed air passes upward through the online vessel; oxygen molecules, which have a smaller kinetic diameter and a stronger affinity for the sieve, are held in the micropores while nitrogen passes through as product. After roughly sixty to one hundred twenty seconds the vessel saturates, the inlet valve closes, and the vessel depressurises to atmosphere. The oxygen-rich stream is vented and the vessel is repressurised with product nitrogen before re-entering service. Because the cycle depends on differential adsorption rather than a chemical reaction, there is no reagent consumption and no chemical waste stream. The practical limits of the process are air quality and temperature: oil carry-over from the compressor blocks sieve micropores permanently, and inlet air above about 45 C reduces adsorption efficiency and cuts recovery.
Design and Application
Sizing a nitrogen generator starts with three numbers: required purity, peak flow and required pressure. Purity and flow trade against each other, because higher purity means a shorter adsorption cycle and more product gas lost to regeneration. A system rated at 99.9% might deliver 200 Nm3/h, while the same skid at 99.99% delivers around 140 Nm3/h. Pressure is handled either by selecting a sieve that operates at the required discharge pressure or by adding a booster downstream. Typical installations include a refrigerated dryer and a three-stage filter ahead of the generator, an air buffer tank to smooth the compressor cycle, and a nitrogen buffer tank sized for the largest single consumer event. Food packaging lines, laser cutting tables and chemical blanketing systems all use the same core skid with different downstream treatment.

What HUAYAN Delivers
HUAYAN builds PSA nitrogen generators around the process, not around a fixed catalogue number. With more than fifty years in gas equipment and a 91,000 square metre manufacturing base, we size sieve volume, cycle time and buffer capacity against your actual consumption curve, then validate the design on a test skid before shipment. Systems are delivered complete, with dryer, filtration, buffer tanks and controls pre-piped and pre-wired, so on-site work is limited to utilities connection. Our units operate in more than fifty countries across food packaging, laser cutting, electronics, pharmaceuticals and petrochemical blanketing, with purity guaranteed by factory performance test and a documented sieve replacement programme.
FAQ
Q: How much nitrogen can a PSA generator produce?
A: Industrial skids cover roughly 1 to 3,000 Nm3/h. Above that range, cryogenic separation is usually more economical.
Q: Does purity affect flow?
A: Yes. Raising purity from 99% to 99.999% typically cuts usable flow by half or more at the same sieve volume, so specify the lowest purity the process tolerates.
